OUR MISSION

Create adventures that inspire change

“We need to redefine the way that we travel to ensure that we travel with purpose and impact.”

— Brad Frankel, Co-Founder

“Life’s about long term happiness that works with nature, not short term gains that work against it”

— Ian Taylor, Co-Founder

We’re helping people travel better — for themselves, the communities they visit, and the planet.

Travel doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to environmental sustainability or social impact. Stories about the industry’s contributions to global emissions, pollution, and habitat loss are all too familiar.

This has to change. We want people to have life-changing travel experiences while leaving the places they visit in a better state than when they arrived.

And that starts with a shift in mindset that lasts far beyond the trip itself.

Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, our diverse educational study tours give students of all ages a deep understanding of conservation.

And it’s hands-on. Our travellers learn by actively helping to protect threatened habitats, vulnerable species, and diminishing cultures — whether that’s on an elephant conservation site in Sri Lanka, a coral restoration spot in Thailand, or a reforestation project in the Amazon.

We’re the first travel company in the UK to:

  • Become a certified B Corp (since 2016 and still the only travel company in the education sector)

  • Declare a climate emergency

  • Sign up to the Science Based Targets initiative

  • Use eDNA metabarcoding to monitor biodiversity

We think global, but act local.

We carefully consider the social and environmental impact of everything we do — including who we partner with to make our travel experiences happen. We only work with people and organisations that positively impact the communities and ecosystems we visit.

That means we:

  • Handpick local suppliers for their sustainability credentials — from the drivers we use to the restaurants we visit

  • Work with local NGOs tackling social and environmental issues

  • Offer travellers a lifetime loyalty programme to help them keep travelling sustainably

We transform outlooks

We want to set a new benchmark for sustainable travel — and that means measuring the lasting impact on our travellers too.

How? Data on changes in behaviours and mental health across our UK and international travellers are collected before and after each of our trips, and assessed through a Paired T-test. This data feeds into our impact reports — each of which have shown a clear improvement towards pro-environmental behaviours.

Our post-programme student survey data shows:

  • 100% are now familiar with the SDG’s

  • 100% appreciate how first-hand experiences connect them to social and environmental issues

  • 84% are prepared to change their behaviour

  • 92% are prepared to reduce their energy and water consumption

  • 96% feel that the trip helped them personally

We’re committed to net-zero travel

We calculate the carbon footprint of each of our trips and offset 120% of emissions to ensure every one is ‘climate positive’. We do this through VCU's (Verified Carbon Units) and CERs (Certified Emission Reductions).

For us, 75% goes through the retirement of VCUs in the Guanaré Forest Plantation Project in Uruguay. 25% goes through the retirement of CERs through the Climate Neutral Now Initiative and the UN Clean Development Mechanism.

And we’re proud to be helping other companies take on similar initiatives, offering advice on measuring and reducing greenhouse gas emissions as a global resource partner of the Climate Neutral Now Initiative.

We actively boost biodiversity

There’s a global biodiversity crisis — and we’re the first travel and conservation company that’s pledged positive action to tackle it.

eDna — collected from environmental samples like soil, water, or air — is just one of the ways our students learn more about the changes in biodiversity and ecosystems around them.

The data our students collect on their trips directly contributes to baseline biodiversity assessments supported by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Equipped with this vital data, we can mobilise local stakeholders and citizen scientists to inform global policy to reverse the loss of biodiversity.

So when you take a trip with us, you’re helping to build a comprehensive ‘biodiversity picture’ of the place you visit.

Our Gamechanger Programme

We want to help educational institutions achieve carbon neutrality — and we’ve got a plan in place to get there:

  1. Sustainability Action Plan

  2. MEP Asset Management Plan

  3. Education Programme

The first two phases are all about assessing and measuring the current position of the school or college. The third phase can help us develop a programme based on the data received and the goals set.

We set science based targets

It’s all well and good talking about change, but it all comes down to the numbers.

We’re one of the first of over 4,000 business leaders to sign up to the Science Based Targets initiative, a commitment to drive ambitious climate action by adhering to transparent science-based emissions reduction targets.

And we’ve committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030 from a 2018 base year — and to measure and reduce our Scope 3 emissions.

  • Planet-first policy

We carefully choose all of the partners we work with for their stellar environmental sustainability credentials, such as BCorp, Travelife, or SUSTOUR.

  • No single-use plastic

We’ve eliminated the use of single-use plastics wherever possible and provide reusable water bottles and bamboo cutlery. To top it off we run talks throughout our trips, educating our travellers on how to travel more sustainably.

  • Welfare before profit

We only work with suppliers that have anti-slavery and animal welfare policies in place. And we take steps to ensure everyone we work with meets our strict standards by constantly monitoring and assessing their practice.

  • For people and planet

All our projects are aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and we further our work by helping schools integrate our projects and the SDGs directly into their curriculum.
