Spend 12 days exploring the culture and wildlife of The Pearl of Africa - Uganda. Visit national parks, conservation projects, schools and NGOs and enjoy a rich and rewarding experience with conservation, wildlife and cultural immersion at its heart.

 
 
 

This experience will allow you to work alongside local communities, understand how sustainable community initiatives are integral to alleviating poverty, deep-dive into unique wildlife conservation projects, all whilst developing practical skills in teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving. Plus, you’ll further your knowledge of the Sustainable Development Goals that align with this project, as well as gain a deeper understanding of your own social and environmental impact.

 

Across 12 days, you’ll immerse yourself in Ugandan culture as well as experience real-life conservation issues.

This trip offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of environmental and sustainability issues. By disconnecting from the digital world and immersing in nature, you will experience a rich and rewarding adventure centred on conservation, wildlife, and cultural immersion. Get the chance to come face-to-face with rare species, contribute to meaningful conservation efforts, and assist with inspirational eco-tourism initiatives.

About your adventure…

Throughout your adventure, you will engage in hands-on activities such as volunteering at the Good Times Primary School, participating in community projects with the Kataara Women Elephant Conservation Project, and visiting the Kyambura Women’s Coffee Cooperative.

Additionally, cultural experiences are integral to this adventure, as you will explore Ugandan villages, work within community initiatives, and learn about the diverse cultures and traditions of Uganda. You will be welcomed by the notoriously friendly Ugandans, whether in cities or rural villages, and can expect to be greeted with curiosity and warmth.

This trip offers unparalleled opportunities to engage with wildlife and conservation efforts in Uganda. You will have the chance to encounter rare and endangered species, such as the critically endangered mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and the unique tree-climbing lions (Panthera leo) in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The itinerary also includes chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) trekking, game drives, and visits to conservation centres, providing a comprehensive understanding of the behaviours, social structures, and conservation challenges facing these animals.

Conservation and Community itinerary

Day 1


Arrive in Entebbe

Upon arriving, you will settle into Entebbe - a lush, laid-back town located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria. The verdant surroundings and relaxed atmosphere are perfect for easing you into your new environment.

Days 2-4


Good Times Primary School

Volunteer at Good Times Primary School, an amazing institution founded in 1992 to provide high-quality education to children from low-income families. You will get the chance to engage in various projects, including building wells and water tanks, and offering support in co-curricular activities. This institution relies on the help of volunteers - such as yourselves - to flourish and provide for the 1,600 students it supports.

Day 5


Queen Elizabeth National Park and Kataara Women’s Poverty Alleviation Group

Today, transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park and experience an evening game drive, spotting lions, hippos (Hippopotamus amphibius), crocodiles (Crocodylus niloticus), and numerous bird species.

Here, you will also visit the Kataara Women’s Poverty Alleviation Group - a community-based organisation building a stronghold of community members all fighting to alleviate poverty and conserve the environment for a sustainable livelihood. You’ll participate in preparing local food, work with the women as they carry out their daily tasks, interact with the local community and have a chance to help make elephant dung paper!

Day 6


Chimpanzees and Kyambura Women’s Coffee Cooperative

An immersive experience that takes you deep into the country's lush rainforests on foot to observe these intelligent primates in their natural habitat. Learn about the threats to chimpanzees, including habitat destruction and poaching. You may also spot vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), colobus monkeys (Colobus guereza) and plenty of birds!

In the afternoon, visit the Kyambura Women’s Coffee Cooperative. These women used to grow bananas and battle daily against banana-hungry elephants (Loxodonta africana). It was suggested they try growing coffee - not a product elephants like to eat - and they never looked back. This is a community-based initiative providing vocational training to women and an alternative and sustainable source of income.

Day 7


Gorilla Health and Community Conservation Centre

Transfer to Buhoma in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and visit the Gorilla Health and Community Conservation Centre to learn about the critical efforts to protect mountain gorillas. The Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) Gorilla Conservation Project is a unique initiative that focuses on the intersection of wildlife conservation, public health, and community development to protect the critically endangered mountain gorillas.

Day 8


Buhoma to Nkuringo

Take a beautiful scenic drive from Buhoma to Nkuringo through stunning landscapes, including lush forests, rolling hills, and terraced farms, providing a glimpse into rural Ugandan life. The amazing views, cultural encounters, and potential wildlife sightings make it a memorable experience that adds depth to the overall journey through Uganda's incredible natural and cultural heritage.

Day 9


Gorilla conservation program in Rubuguri

Here in the mountainous forests of central Africa live the last remaining mountain gorillas. Now endangered, mountain gorillas number barely a thousand. The Gorilla conservation program in Rubuguri is a vital initiative that not only focuses on the survival of mountain gorillas but also promotes sustainable community development and environmental stewardship.

The efforts undertaken by the team aim to address challenges such as poaching, illegal logging, and encroachment as well as to co-exist with the Mountain Gorillas with whom they share the forests. Activities here include handicraft making, nature walks, Batwa culture, traditional music, dance and drama, bird watching, tea farming and tea harvesting.

Day 10


Lake Mburo National Park

Despite being the smallest of Uganda's savannah national parks, Lake Mburo National Park boasts a rich geological history with Precambrian metamorphic rocks dating back over 500 million years.

The park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, home to 350 bird species and a diverse array of animals, including plains zebras (Equus quagga), impalas (Aepyceros melampus), elands (Taurotragus oryx), buffalos (Syncerus caffer), leopards (Panthera pardus), and hyenas (Crocuta crocuta/Hyaena brunnea). Here, take your last game drive and try your hand at spotting these amazing species.

Day 11


Transfer back to Entebbe

Transfer back to your starting point and spend your final evening reflecting on the incredible places you've explored, the wildlife you've encountered, and the people you've met.

Look back on the last 12 days of conservation, community involvement, wildlife spotting and adventure, making memories that last a lifetime.

Once you have had your place confirmed, you will then receive a link to register your details and necessary activity permissions with Flooglebinder. VACCINATIONS

For this particular trip, please see details below.

Please check with your local GP to find out which vaccinations you require for any adventure that you decide to book. These are a guide; a full consultation is necessary to establish individual risk and suitability of vaccines. There may be instances where more than one appointment is required to assess whether a vaccine can be offered.

INSURANCE

Please check if your school/college provides insurance and if not we will require your policy number and details 8 weeks before departure. Flooglebinder has public liability cover of £5million but participants must arrange their own travel insurance for all other levels of cover (e.g. cancellation, curtailment, loss of personal belongings etc.). Please feel free to contact us for any advice or recommendations.
